Backing the kids
Saddle Mountain Intermediate secretary
Alisha Avalos, right, is packed in a whole
mountain of Everest backpacks thanks to
employees at Larson Fruit in Selah.
Rick Kuehnert of Larson Fruit ex-
plained that the company picked Mattawa
as an ag community who's children could
use a boost. They donated 40 filled back-
packs to the school. They donated 200
backpacks in all in the region. Kuehnert
said it was part of their Tennis Shoe Crew
"Building Community Ties" who decided
on the Backpacks for Kids program.
Alisha said the backpacks will be used
throughout the year for students who need
them. Already they have given them out to
students who lost everything in an apart-
ment fire in Mattawa last month.

Letters from page 2
As with many of the voters, we have taken the time to
attend forums, listen to the candidates, and discuss issues
important to us with most of the candidates
That's why we are supporting Sheriff Frank DeTrolio
for re-election. We believe Frank has earned our vote by:
reducing highway fatalities, instituting the ban on alcohol
in the sand dunes area so all families can enjoy camping
and boating there, and implementing a K-9 drug dog unit
to fight the use of drug related crimes.
Also, during these challenging economic times when
government budgets are constricted; and we as taxpayers
are expecting our governments to "do more with less,"
Frank DeTrolio has successfully managed to work within
the budget approved by the Grant County Commissioners
by applying for various federal and state grants that have
allowed him to return surplus monies back to the County
General Fund.
He has been successful in negotiating labor contracts with
his staff without going to
binding arbitration or having
costly litigations.

We believe his budgeting experience warrants his remain-
ing in office as our Sheriff.
Another candidate we have decided to support is, Grant
County PUD Commissioner, Bob Bernd. Bob, unanimously
with the other four Commissioners, has taken a very chal-
lenging position to protect us, the PUD ratepayers/owners
against the challenges of the Crescent Bar Island "rent-
ers."
We believe the PUD Commissioners' efforts will be re-
warded in the long-term, with increased tourism by people
from everywhere, and at the same time comply with the
directive from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
(FERC). And, the best benefit is the people in Grant and
Douglas Counties will also have better access and recreation
opportunities for our children and grandchildren.
We are asking you to join us in voting for Sheriff
Frank DeTrolio and Grant County PUD Commissioner
Bob Bernd.
